RESURRECTED - by Kelly
Kevin: Is it all over?.... Been trying to find my way back. I thought we were still
fighting.
Kevin: I couldn't help it I got lost.
Kevin: We'd just brought someone from our platoon down, Johnny Fodden, he had a bad
head wound. Then we went back up the ridge.
Corporal: And after that you don't remember anything?
Kevin: No corp, not for three days.
Corporal: How do you know it was three days?
Kevin: I was soaked, I'd eaten all my rations, I don't know it's all a blank, it
felt like three.
Corporal: So what about this shack then, how do you think it came to be stashed full
of army rations?
Kevin: I think some of our spotters had been there, caught in down fire. It looked
like they'd been discovered, run off.
Corporal: And you stayed there for seven weeks?
Kevin: I didn't know what to do corp, I thought I'd stumbled behind enemy lines.
Corporal: You realise they surrended six hours after you'd gone missing?
Kevin: No sir.
Corporal: Didn't it ever occur to you that it was all over?
Kevin: No sir.
Corporal: No guns, no sounds, no smoke, you thought we were still fighting?
Kevin: I couldn't be sure.
Corporal: You didn't notice any helicopters, foot patrols out looking for you?
Kevin: No.
Corporal: We spent 10 days looking for you Private Deakin.
Kevin: I never saw anybody sir.
Corporal: Neither did we.
Kevin: Where's that f**kin medic. Oh christ Johnny, keep awake. You're alright
Johnny, you're alright.
Kevin: Oh yeah, didn't recognise her with her clothes on!
Friend in pub: Did you kill any?
Kevin: Can't tell, you know, I was just giving cover fire.
Friend: How come you were stretcher bearing then?
Kevin: I volunteered. Bloody frozen just lying there. Anyway, what you been doing?
Kevin: It was pathetic. Just kids half of them, never been out their own village
before you know. They had no stomach for fighting, its tragic.
Kevin: Must of lost my memory more than I thought. When you back at work?
Julie: Two weeks. What shall we do?
Kevin: We can do anything. I'm alive.
Kevin: Bloody papers.
Julie: Perhaps they wondered why you stayed so long?
Kevin: You want to try finding your way back across them mountains, without a
compas. Freezing cold weather. Six hours daylight a day. I did try a couple of
times, I was walking around in circles. Julie: But you got back eventually.
Kevin: Me food ran out, it was either find me way back or stay in that filthy shack
and die. You know, I mean what is this an interrogation? You shouldn't have egged me
on to go down there in the first place then it'd have never haapened.
Julie: What?
Kevin: You, you kept saying how proud you were of me before I went.
Julie: Well I was when I knew you had to go but I didn't make you go did I, how
could I?
Kevin: I go, like everybody wanted me to, and then when I come back and I'm not the
same they all start complaining. Everything I say gets twisted. I can't even go in a
pub without it being some kind of orgy.
Julie: It's just a mystery to us, what you did all that time.
Kevin: Kept alive, you don't have time for much else. It's impossible, I can't
describe what it was like. What did my mum and dad do, you know, when I was dead?
Julie: They were upset, your mother was off work for 4 weeks compassionate leave.
They went to a medium you know.
Kevin: A medium? What for?
Julie: They wanted to know how you were getting on I suppose
Kevin: What about you?
Julie: I was all upset, it was so sudden, and then you came back.
Kevin: Do you wish I hadn't?
Julie: Course I don't
Kevin: I didn't run.
Kevin: How come you never asked what happened to me?
Greg: You lost your memory didn't you?
Kevin: Yes.
Greg: Well then, no point asking. What's it like?
Kevin: What?
Greg: Losing your memory?
Kevin: I forget now.
Kevin: I should have stayed down there.
Kevin: Do you believe in ghosts? Perhaps thats what I am. I mean I died, didn't I?
Kevin: What war did you fight in? You ought to try standing a few yards from a 6
inch shell when it goes off, see what it does to your memory. You should see what it
does to your mates. Arms and legs and bollocks hanging off, and you having to carry
them, and joke about it, pretend that they're alright. You should try it.
Julie: What's going to happen to us Kevin?
Kevin: I'll be back in November its not long. We can write.
Mrs Deakin: You won't get lost again will you?
Kevin: I'll try not to.
Kevin: What's your problem Slaven? .... If you've got something to say, say it.
Otherwise leave me alone.
Slaven: My problem Deakin is that a bagshite like you runs off for seven weeks and
then gets allowed back in here.
Kevin: And you were brave were you? Hiding behind rocks, while people were lying
with their heads shot open.
Julie: You never said you were coming.
Kevin: Thought I'd surprise you.
Julie: You're drunk Kevin
Kevin: So much for getting married eh?
Julie: No it's not like that. Anyway, you've not seemed so keen. I can't not get on
with my life while you're away.
Kevin: Evidently.
Julie: It's not been the same since you came back.
Kevin: My big mistake that wasn't it, coming back.
Julie: You're in a world of your own half the time, and I've been confused. I'm not
sure it could work anymore.
Kevin: You think I ran too?
Julie: No it's not what I think that matters. If we were to get married and we
stayed here I'd be tarred with the same brush, and I don't think I could stand it.
Kevin: We'll live somewhere else.
Julie: Where? In the barracks?
Kevin: I'll leave.
Julie: And where would we live? What job could you get?
Man: Julie are you coming or what?
Kevin: What you waiting for?
Julie: You Kevin. You like you were before all this happened.
Kevin: I'm celebrating my return. Aren't you glad to see me this time? You'd all
have been a lot happier if I'd stayed dead. You could've had your plaque on the
church wall then. You'd have had your village hero, the whole bit for the photos.
That's all you were interested in, not me. I'm just an embarrassment aren't I now?
If I'm not a hero then I must be a deserter, well I'm neither. Bloody stupid
pointless war.
Vicar: No one's saying you're a deserter.
Kevin: Then why rip them pages out of that book like it'd never happened, like I'd
never existed? Because it makes you all look ridiculous, thats why. You don't know
what happened down there, none of you. You were all here, watching it. Watching it
on settees on telly. You know nothing.
Mr Deakin: Come on, lets get you back. I'm sorry about this.
Kevin: Don't apologise for me. You're all hypocrites. You've used me.
Kevin: I swear by the colours of my regiment, to tell the truth, the whole truth,
and nothing but the truth. So help me Jesus.
Slaven: How do you plead - guilty or not guilty?
Kevin: Not guilty, there was an enquiry.
Slaven: Where were you on the night of June 13th 1982?
Kevin: On the mountain, in the advance.
Slaven: So how come if you were advancing you suddenly decided to f**k off in the
opposite direction?
Kevin: It took our unit 48 hours to regroup after that battle. It was snowing, there
were people all over the place, I wasn't the only one to get lost. I told you, I
lost me memory.
Slaven: Memory be bollocked, you went off because you were shit scared.
Kevin: That's not true.
Slaven: So how come you were in this shack for 48 f**king days, instead of returning
to your unit. You didn't lose your memory for that long.
Kevin: I thought we were still fighting
Slaven: All the more reason to go back. The fact is Deakin you lost your bottle.
Slaven: Come on Deakin, stop f**king about now, admit you did a runner.
Kevin: I never ran.
Slaven: A shell landed, all hell broke loose. You saw your chance and took it.
Kevin: It's not true.
Slaven: Admit you ran.
Kevin: I don't remember what happened.
Slaven: Admit.
Kevin: It was like I'd gone through a curtain, like a dream.
Slaven: Cut the poetry Deakin, just tell us straight.
Kevin: I can't remember.
Slaven: We're going to get you Deakin, if not tonight, then some other time
Corporal: I think you're going to have to tell them Private Deakin. This isn't going
to go away. We have to know now.
Slaven: Admit you were scared.
Kevin: I thought I saw Johnny.
Slaven: Where?
Kevin: On the mountain, just before the explosion.
Slaven: He was down at the staging post you t*at.
Kevin: I know. I thought he was dead. I thought he was dead and come to get me. I
thought that was it. I was scared.
Kevin: I never said I was a hero.
Kevin: I couldn't carry on running away though could I, like you said..... I knew
what I was doing.
