I have written to Marjo and asked her to post this missive from me to thank
you all whoever you are out there for all your generosity of spirit
recently. To everyone who sent warm messages to Anna and I regarding the
birth of our beautiful daughter, Gracie, and for all those touching birthday
greetings, I say a big and sincere thank you. As I said to Marjo, I check
out the site on a regular basis, as it is often the best way of finding out
what I am up to, and whether or not the information about me is correct. I
have been out of the country a lot at the moment and depend upon the site to
know what has been printed, and where. You all do a very, very thorough job,
and I really do appreciate it. I feel that I should clear up a few things
which seem to be puzzling you, so that I can put your lovely little minds at
rest.
First of all Cheeky: As most of you know I finished this film a few
years ago. I'm afraid to say that, despite being warmly received at both the
Toronto and London film festivals, the film has thus far failed to find a
distributor. More than that I cannot tell you as I am told by my producers
who I am no longer in communication with, for reasons too abstruse to go
into in this context that it is becoming increasingly difficult to release
small independent British films. So there you go. Of course there is always
the possibility that it's just not very good. Maybe I will send a copy to
Marjo and let her be the judge.
Secondly My novel: In this regard there is better news, since I am sat
here, right now in Prague, (where Anna is filming), putting the very final
touches to it. I fully expect to hand it over to my publishers by the end of
May, and it should, therefore be available by next spring. It is not, by the
way, titled "The Man Is A Legend", and never was. As yet I have not come up
with a title. The reason for the delay is that, due to falling in love and
having my time taken up with filming, I simply put it away in a drawer for
five years and did nothing about it. But I think I can promise you that it
will be in the shops next year.
I can also tell you that I am about to begin a film scripted and directed
by the great American novelist, Paul Auster, called "The Inner Life of
Martin Frost". We shall be shooting just a few miles outside of Lisbon all
through May. It is a love story starring myself and Irene Jacob. I have
decided to go a little art-house after some of my more recent commercial
ventures. Speaking of which, sorry about Basic Instinct 2; Sometimes you
just take what comes along! Let's see what the critics think of The Omen! I
actually think it will be better than a lot of people anticipate, although I
haven't yet seen it myself. It has a wonderful cast.
So there you go, another letter of thanks from me, and a few mysteries
solved. I had intended to make this a funnier letter than it has turned out
to be, but as I read it back I realise that there is not one joke. Maybe
next time. As I'm sure you realise I don't like to do too much press and
value my privacy, but since you are all so kind and appreciative I thought
that I would do something a little more personal and write you all this
letter. If you have any more worries perhaps Marjo could set up a thread
with specific questions that I may be able to answer in time.
So, Happy Easter and once again thank you
David xxx
